What is OT (operational technology) and how is it different from IT?
Operational technology is the hardware and software that runs physical processes — the controllers, sensors and systems on a factory floor or in critical infrastructure. It differs from IT because availability and safety come first, systems have long lifecycles, and a fault can stop production or endanger people. That is why OT security and OT/IT integration need specialists who understand both worlds.
What does OT security involve?
OT security is about protecting operational technology without compromising the availability and safety it exists for. In practice it means understanding the estate and its risks, segmenting OT networks from IT, monitoring for threats, and applying recognised practice such as the IEC 62443 standard — designed around live industrial constraints rather than treated like ordinary office IT.
